The most commonly used size of one bigha in each region, in square feet. This is why a converter must ask where your land is.

Area calculators
Measure first, then convert.
This जमीन नापने वाला कैलकुलेटर (land unit converter) changes any Indian land unit into another: bigha, katha, gaj, cent, decimal, guntha, marla, kanal, acre, hectare and square feet. Pick your units, type the number, and choose your state where a unit has more than one size.
Why land units are confusing in India
India has two kinds of land units. Fixed units, like the acre, hectare, gaj, cent and guntha, have one size everywhere. Local units, like the bigha, katha, biswa, dhur and marla, change from state to state and sometimes from district to district. A bigha is 27,225 sq ft in Uttar Pradesh but 14,400 sq ft in West Bengal. The converter asks for your region whenever this matters.
1 एकड़ में कितनी जमीन होती है?
1 acre (एकड़) is 43,560 sq ft. That is 4,840 gaj, 4,046.86 sq m, 100 cents or decimal, 40 guntha, 8 kanal or 160 marla. In bigha it depends on the state: 1.6 bigha in Uttar Pradesh, 3.025 bigha in West Bengal and 5 bigha in Himachal Pradesh. See acre to bigha and acre to square feet.
1 हेक्टेयर में कितनी जमीन होती है?
1 hectare (हेक्टेयर) is 10,000 sq m, which is 107,639.1 sq ft or 2.4711 acre. It equals 100 are. Many state land records now show area in hectares. See hectare to acre and hectare to bigha.

जमीन नापने का फार्मूला
The basic formula is simple: area = length x width. Measure both sides in feet and multiply. A plot of 30 ft by 40 ft is 1,200 sq ft. Then convert to the unit you want: divide by 9 for gaj, by 435.6 for cent or decimal, or by 43,560 for acre.
- Plot with four unequal sides: split it into two triangles with a diagonal and add their areas.
- Triangle: use Heron's formula with the three sides.
- Feet and inches: change inches to feet by dividing by 12.
The land area calculator does these shapes for you, and the square feet calculator handles rooms and plots measured in feet, inches, metres or centimetres.
Land measurement by state
Each state has its own units, record formats and portals. Start with Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Maharashtra or Tamil Nadu.
Before you rely on a number
- Check the land record. Most records show hectare, acre or decimal, which are fixed units. Convert from those.
- Ask which bigha or katha a seller means, and get the length of every side.
- This site is not an official source. For a sale, partition or court matter, confirm the unit with the local tehsil, patwari, lekhpal, amin or revenue office.
Questions people ask
1 एकड़ में कितनी जमीन होती है?
1 acre is 43,560 sq ft, or 4,840 gaj. It is also 100 decimal, 40 guntha or 8 kanal. In bigha it depends on the state.
1 हेक्टेयर में कितनी जमीन होती है?

जमीन नापने का फार्मूला क्या है?
For a rectangle, area is length x width. For a plot with four unequal sides, draw a diagonal and add the areas of the two triangles. Then convert the square feet to your local unit.
Is there an app needed to measure land?
No app is needed to convert units. Measure the sides with a tape, then use this converter or the land area calculator in your browser. Phone GPS readings can be off, so do not use them for legal work.
Are these conversions official?
No. Fixed units like the acre and hectare are exact, but bigha, katha and similar units follow local practice. Confirm the local value with the revenue office before any legal use.
