1 gaj in square feet is 9, because in Indian land deals a gaj (गज) is one square yard, and a square yard is 3 feet by 3 feet. To change gaj to square feet, multiply the gaj figure by 9.
Why a gaj is 9 square feet
A yard is 3 feet long. When a plot is sold "in gaj", the seller means square yards: a small square 3 feet on each side. Count the little squares inside it and you get 3 rows of 3, which is 9 square feet.
This is why the same word causes trouble. On a cloth shop counter, 1 gaj is a length of 3 feet. On a plot map, 1 gaj is an area of 9 square feet. When someone asks "1 gaj mein kitne foot hote hain", the answer for land is 9 square feet, not 3 feet.
The gaj does not change from state to state. A gaj in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan or Haryana is the same 9 square feet. In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh the square yard is called gajam, and 1 gajam is also 9 square feet.
How to convert gaj to square feet
Square feet = gaj × 9
Worked example: a colony plot is sold as 70 gaj. 70 × 9 = 630 square feet. That is the full plot area, not the built up area of a house on it.
Going the other way, divide by 9. A 1,350 sq ft plot is 1,350 ÷ 9 = 150 gaj. For more on that direction, see square feet to gaj.
Plot sizes you will hear often
Plot sizes are usually quoted as a round gaj number. Here is what some of them look like on the ground. The sides are only examples; any length and width that multiply to the same area work too.
| Plot in gaj | Square feet | One possible shape |
|---|---|---|
| 25 gaj | 225 sq ft | 15 ft by 15 ft |
| 50 gaj | 450 sq ft | 15 ft by 30 ft |
| 100 gaj | 900 sq ft | 30 ft by 30 ft |
| 125 gaj | 1,125 sq ft | 25 ft by 45 ft |
| 180 gaj | 1,620 sq ft | 36 ft by 45 ft |
| 200 gaj | 1,800 sq ft | 30 ft by 60 ft |

Practical tips before you pay
- Measure all four sides. Multiply length by width in feet, then divide by 9. If the result is lower than the gaj on the agreement, ask why.
- Check the registry unit. Many sale deeds give the area in square meters, not gaj. 1 gaj is 0.836127 square meter, so a 100 gaj plot is about 83.61 square meters. Use square meter to gaj to match the two.
- Do not round too early. A 1,250 sq ft plot is 138.89 gaj. Rounding it to 139 gaj looks harmless, but on a high rate per gaj the gap adds up.
- Odd shaped plots need each part measured on its own. The land area calculator can help with four unequal sides.
For a sale or partition, always confirm the area with the local revenue office or the land record. This page is a calculation guide, not a legal measurement.
