1 acre in square feet is 43,560 sq ft. This is the same in every Indian state, and 1 square foot is 0.000023 acre. If you know the acres, multiply by 43,560 to get square feet.
Picture an acre
43,560 is not a round number, which makes the acre hard to remember. Two shapes help:
- A long field 66 ft wide and 660 ft long is exactly 1 acre.
- A square field of 1 acre has sides of about 208.71 ft.
For a sense of scale, a 30 ft by 40 ft house plot is 1,200 sq ft. An acre could hold 36.3 such plots if there were no roads, drains or open space, which never happens in a real layout.
How to convert acres to square feet
Square feet = acres × 43,560
Worked example: a farm of 2.75 acre. 2.75 × 43,560 = 1,19,790 square feet. For half an acre, 0.5 × 43,560 = 21,780 sq ft. For a quarter acre, 10,890 sq ft.
To go back from square feet to acres, divide by 43,560. A 10,000 sq ft plot is 0.2296 acre.
Quick figures for parts of an acre

- 0.75 acre = 32,670 sq ft (75 decimal)
- 1.5 acre = 65,340 sq ft
- 10 acre = 4,35,600 sq ft

One acre in the units each state uses
The acre is the link between almost every Indian land unit. Once you know what an acre holds in your local unit, the rest is simple multiplication.
| Unit | 1 acre equals | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| square yard (gaj) | 4,840 | everywhere, for plots |
| square meter | 4,046.8564 | deeds and metric records |
| hectare | 0.4047 | revenue records in most states |
| cent or decimal | 100 | Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal |
| guntha | 40 | Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Gujarat |
| kanal | 8 | Punjab, Haryana, Himachal |
| marla (standard) | 160 | Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, Jammu |
| killa | 1 | Punjab and Haryana |
| ground | 18.15 | Chennai |
The bigha is not in this list on purpose. It changes from region to region, so 1 acre can be anything from 0.6667 bigha to 6.4021 bigha. See acre to bigha for each region.
Tips when reading land papers
- Acre and guntha: in Telangana, an extent written as 1.20 usually means 1 acre 20 guntas, not 1.2 acres. 1 acre 20 guntas is 65,340 sq ft, while 1.2 acres is 52,272 sq ft.
- Acre and decimal: in Bihar, Odisha and West Bengal, records pair the acre with the decimal. Because 100 decimals make an acre, 35 decimal is 0.35 acre, or 15,246 sq ft.
- Hectare records: many states now show area in hectares. 1 hectare is 2.4711 acre.
- For a sale or partition, confirm the extent in the record of rights and with the local revenue office.
