1 acre to cent is the easiest land conversion in India: 1 acre = 100 cents, in every state. The word cent comes from "hundred", and a cent is simply one hundredth of an acre.
Quick answer
- 1 acre = 100 cents
- 1 cent = 0.01 acre
- 1 cent = 435.6 square feet, about 40.4686 square metres or 48.4 square yards
Unlike bigha or katha, the cent does not change from district to district. A cent in Kerala is the same size as a cent in Tamil Nadu, coastal Karnataka or Andhra Pradesh.
How to convert acre to cent
The formula is one step:
cents = acres × 100
Worked example: a family farm is recorded as 2.5 acres. Multiply 2.5 by 100 and you get 250 cents. If you want square feet as well, multiply the cents by 435.6: 250 × 435.6 = 108,900 sq ft. You get the same figure from 2.5 × 43,560.
To go back from cents to acres, divide by 100. So 75 cents is 0.75 acre, and 1,000 cents is 10 acres.
Reading acre and cent written together
Older deeds and village talk often write an area as acres and cents side by side. "1 acre 35 cents" is 135 cents, which is 1.35 acres. Because the cent is a hundredth, the digits after the decimal point in an acre figure are already the cents. 3.08 acres means 3 acres 8 cents, not 3 acres 80 cents. This is a common slip when people copy figures by hand.
Where people use cents
Cents are the everyday plot unit in Kerala, Tamil Nadu villages and small towns, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and the coastal districts of Karnataka. A house plot of 5 cents (2,178 sq ft) or 10 cents (4,356 sq ft) is a typical size in these areas.
In eastern India the same unit is called the decimal or dismil. In Bengal it is also called satak. All of them are 435.6 sq ft, so acre to decimal gives the same numbers as this page.

Practical tips
- Check which unit the record uses. Revenue records in Kerala and Tamil Nadu now show area in hectare and are, while sellers speak in cents. 1 are is about 2.4711 cents, and 1 hectare is about 247.1054 cents. Use hectare to cent for those papers.
- Do not mix cents with grounds. In Chennai, plots are quoted in grounds of 2,400 sq ft. One ground is about 5.5096 cents, and an acre is about 18.15 grounds.
- Round only at the end. Cents from acres never need rounding, but square feet and square metres do. Keep two decimals for metres in a deed.
- Confirm before you pay. For a sale or partition, match the cents with the survey number on the land record and ask the village or taluk revenue office if anything does not add up.
