1 killa is 4,840 gaj. A killa is the Punjab and Haryana name for an acre, so it is 43,560 sq ft, the same as 8 kanal or 160 marla.

What is a killa?

Killa (किल्ला, also ghumaon) is the word farmers in Punjab and Haryana use for one acre of land. In the revenue tables, a killa is a rectangle of 36 karam by 40 karam. With a karam of 5.5 ft, that is 198 ft by 220 ft, which gives exactly 43,560 sq ft. Revenue records in both states treat 1 acre as 8 kanal.

Larger blocks are counted in murabba. 25 killa are commonly said to make 1 murabba, which is 1,089,000 sq ft.

Hectare to killa

1 hectare = 2.4711 killa, and 1 killa = 0.4047 hectare. Government figures in Punjab and Haryana are often given in hectares, so multiply hectares by 2.4711 to get killa. For example, 4 hectare is 9.88 killa.

Killa and bigha

Old records in Haryana and Delhi use a bigha of about 9,075 sq ft, so 1 killa = 4.8 bigha (4 bigha 16 biswa). Against the pucca bigha of Uttar Pradesh, 1 killa = 1.6 bigha. See killa to bigha for every region.

Note one old exception. Haryana's pre settlement tables describe a "kila" of 4 bigha on the old 57.157 inch karam, about 36,299 sq ft. Today killa means the 43,560 sq ft acre, but older documents may use the old meaning. Sources differ, so check the record.

How to convert killa

  1. Killa to gaj: multiply by 4,840. Example: 3 killa = 14,520 gaj.
  2. Killa to square feet: multiply by 43,560. Example: 1.5 killa = 65,340 sq ft.
  3. Killa to kanal: multiply by 8. Example: 2.5 killa = 20 kanal.
  4. Kanal and marla to killa: change to marla, then divide by 160. Example: 12 kanal 10 marla = 250 marla = 1.5625 killa.

See killa to acre, acre to gaj and the Haryana guide.

Worked example: splitting killas

A farmer owns 6 killa and wants to give equal shares to four children. Each share is 1.5 killa. In kanal, that is 12 kanal, which is 12 kanal. In square feet, each child gets 65,340 sq ft, and in gaj 7,260 gaj.

If one share must be cut as a residential plot, the gaj figure helps. For example, a 200 gaj plot taken out of a killa is 0.0413 killa, or 6.61 marla.

Killa and acre in other states

A killa is just an acre, so it compares directly with units elsewhere. 1 killa = 40 guntha in Maharashtra or Karnataka, 100 cents in Kerala and 100 decimal in Bihar or Odisha. It is 3.025 bigha in West Bengal and 5 bigha in Himachal Pradesh. In Uttarakhand it is 6.4 bigha.

Tips

  • In the jamabandi, land is shown in kanal and marla, not killa. Divide total kanal by 8 to get killa.
  • The Punjab Land Records Manual also asks for areas in hectares. To check a hectare figure, multiply it by 2.4711 and compare it with the killa count you were told.
  • When a buyer quotes a price per killa and a seller quotes per kanal, convert both to one unit before you compare. One killa is always 8 kanal.
  • For a sale or partition, confirm the area with the patwari and check the land record.
