Where the decimal is used
The decimal is the plot unit of eastern India. Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal all record land in acre and decimal. In Bengali it is often called satak or shatak. South India uses the cent, which is the same size.
The size of a decimal never changes. A dismil in Patna, Ranchi, Cuttack or Kolkata is the same 435.6 square feet. In Bihar and Jharkhand the answer to "1 dismil to square feet" is therefore always 435.6, even though the katha and bigha change from district to district.

Why the decimal is the safe unit in Bihar
In Bihar, 1 bigha is always 20 katha and 1 katha is 20 dhur, but the katha itself changes by district. That means "2 katha" can be a very different plot in Patna and in Bettiah. The decimal does not have this problem. Here is how one katha compares with the decimal in different places. These katha values are commonly used local figures, not official notifications.
| Area | 1 katha | 1 katha in decimal |
|---|---|---|
| Bihar: Patna and Arrah | 1,361.25 sq ft | 3.125 decimal |
| Bihar: Chhapra | 1,742.4 sq ft | 4 decimal |
| Bihar: Siwan | 1,520 sq ft | 3.4894 decimal |
| Bihar: Hajipur and Muzaffarpur | 1,901.25 sq ft | 4.3647 decimal |
| Bihar: Bettiah | 3,267 sq ft | 7.5 decimal |
| West Bengal, Ranchi | 720 sq ft | 1.6529 decimal |
When you compare two deeds, or a deed with a seller's spoken figure, change both into decimal first. For the katha side, see katha to square feet.
Tips for reading records
