How to calculate square feet
- Measure the length and the width.
- Change both to feet if needed (see the table below).
- Multiply: square feet = length (ft) x width (ft).
Example: a room of 12 ft by 15 ft is 12 x 15 = 180 sq ft. A plot of 30 ft by 40 ft is 1,200 sq ft.
Feet and inches
There are 12 inches in a foot. Divide the inches by 12 and add them to the feet. A wall of 10 ft 6 in is 10.5 ft. A room of 10 ft 6 in by 12 ft 9 in is 10.5 x 12.75 = 133.875 sq ft.

- Square inches to square feet: divide by 144. Example: 1,440 sq in = 10 sq ft.
- Square cm to square feet: divide by 929.0304. 1 sq ft = 929.0304 sq cm.
- Square mm to square feet: divide by 92,903.04. 1 sq ft = 92,903.04 sq mm.
- Square metres to square feet: multiply by 10.7639. Example: 100 sq m = 1,076.39 sq ft.
- Square yards (gaj) to square feet: multiply by 9. Example: 100 gaj = 900 sq ft.
Worked examples
Tiles in cm: a floor of 360 cm by 420 cm is 11.811 ft by 13.7795 ft, which is 162.75 sq ft.
Drawing in mm: an architect's plan shows a bedroom of 3,600 mm by 3,000 mm. That is 116.25 sq ft.
L shaped room: split it into two rectangles. If one part is 12 ft by 10 ft and the other 8 ft by 6 ft, the total is 120 + 48 = 168 sq ft.
Round room or area: for a circle, area = 3.1416 x radius x radius. A circle of 10 ft radius is about 314.16 sq ft.
Can you convert square feet to feet?
Not directly. Feet measure length and square feet measure area, so you need a shape. If the area is a square, the side is the square root of the area: a square of 900 sq ft has sides of 30 ft, and a square of 1,600 sq ft has sides of 40 ft. If you know one side of a rectangle, divide the area by it. A 1,200 sq ft plot that is 30 ft wide is 40 ft long.

- Measure each wall or side twice. Rooms and plots are often not perfect rectangles.
