1 guntha to square feet is 1,089 sq ft. A guntha (गुंठा, also written gunta) is a square 33 feet by 33 feet, and 40 guntha make one acre. In reverse, 1 square foot is 0.000918 guntha.
The guntha in one picture
Stand at one corner of a plot, walk 33 feet, turn, walk another 33 feet. Close the square and you have marked out a guntha. That is 1,089 square feet, 121 gaj (square yards) or about 101.17 square meters.
Because 40 of these squares fill an acre, the guntha works neatly with the acre: 10 guntha is a quarter acre, 20 guntha is half an acre.
Where the guntha is used
- Maharashtra: the most used local sub unit. Older 7/12 entries may show acre and guntha; modern ones use hectare and are.
- Karnataka: the RTC (Pahani) shows acre and gunta, common around Bengaluru.
- Telangana: agricultural land is recorded in acres and guntas on the Pahani and pattadar passbook.
- Andhra Pradesh: a traditional unit for farm land.
- Gujarat: used statewide; the common vigha of 17,424 sq ft is exactly 16 guntha.
- Odisha: used in rural areas, mainly in the south, where 1 guntha is 2.5 decimal.
The size is the same in all of these states. Only the way it is written on records changes.
How to convert guntha to square feet
Square feet = guntha × 1,089

Reading acre and guntha figures
Here is the trap. In Telangana, records often write acre and guntha with a dot. An extent of 2.30 there usually means 2 acre 30 guntha, not 2.3 acre.
- 2 acre 30 guntha = 2 × 43,560 + 30 × 1,089 = 1,19,790 sq ft.
- 2.3 acre = 1,00,188 sq ft.
The gap is 19,602 square feet. Since there are only 40 guntha in an acre, any figure after the dot above 39 tells you it cannot be guntha. When in doubt, check the column heading on the record, and confirm with the village or taluk revenue office before a deal.
