Fact-Checking Policy

People use our numbers when they buy, sell or divide land, so we check them carefully.

Standard units

The acre, hectare, are, square meter, square foot and square yard have fixed definitions. Our converter uses the exact international definitions (1 foot = 0.3048 meter) and India’s legal metrology rules for metric units.

Local units

  • Units such as bigha, biswa, katha, dhur and kuncham are not fixed by one national law. Their size comes from local practice, old settlement records and state rules.
  • We use official government sources where they state a value, and widely used local values where they do not. Each state guide says which is which.
  • Where sources disagree, we say so on the page instead of picking one value silently.

Calculations

Every figure on every page is calculated from one data file and checked by script. Our calculators use standard geometry formulas.
