1 bigha in gaj is 3,025 gaj with the pucca bigha used in Uttar Pradesh, central Bihar and east Rajasthan. It is 1,936 gaj with the kachha bigha of west Rajasthan and the Gujarat vigha, 1,600 gaj in West Bengal and Assam, and about 1,333.33 gaj in Madhya Pradesh. Since 1 gaj is 9 sq ft, just divide the bigha's square feet by 9.
Why this question matters so much
"1 bigha mein kitne gaj hote hain" is usually asked by someone turning farm land into plots, or buying a plot carved out of a field. The land is known in bigha, but the plots are sold in gaj. Get the bigha wrong and every plot count after that is wrong too.
Neat squares in gaj
Three common bighas are perfect squares when measured in yards:
- Pucca bigha: 55 gaj by 55 gaj = 3,025 gaj (165 ft by 165 ft).
- Kachha bigha or Gujarat vigha: 44 gaj by 44 gaj = 1,936 gaj (132 ft by 132 ft).
- West Bengal and Assam bigha: 40 gaj by 40 gaj = 1,600 gaj (120 ft by 120 ft).
How many plots fit in a bigha
The table shows 1 bigha in gaj for each region, and how many 100 gaj or 200 gaj plots that area equals. Real layouts lose land to roads, drains and parks, so the number of plots you can actually sell is always lower. Treat these as the upper limit.

How to convert bigha to gaj
Gaj = bigha × (square feet in your bigha) ÷ 9
Worked example: 2.5 bigha in a pucca bigha area of UP. 2.5 × 27,225 = 68,062.5 sq ft. Divide by 9: 7,562.5 gaj. If you already know 1 bigha is 3,025 gaj, simply multiply: 2.5 × 3,025 gives the same answer.
For gaj to bigha, reverse it. A 500 gaj plot is 0.1653 pucca bigha, or 0.3125 West Bengal bigha.
Haryana and Delhi: a special case
In Delhi and Haryana, the old bigha-biswa records use a bigha of about 9,075 sq ft, which is 1,008.33 gaj. Delhi village records treat this bigha as official. Some property sites quote 27,225 sq ft for Haryana instead, which would be 3,025 gaj. Sources differ, so check the jamabandi. Haryana records made after settlement use kanal and marla, so the bigha shows up mainly in older papers.
