1 acre in gaj is exactly 4,840 gaj. A gaj is one square yard (9 square feet), and an acre is 43,560 square feet, so 43,560 ÷ 9 = 4,840.
Why this number never changes
Both units are fixed. The acre and the square yard come from the same old yard measure, so the answer is a whole number with no rounding. Unlike a bigha, you do not need to know the state or district. 1 acre is 4,840 gaj in Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur or Lucknow.
In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh the same square yard is called gajam, so "1 acre in gajam" is also 4,840.
Formula and a worked example
Gaj = acre × 4,840
Example: a farmer sells 2.5 acres to a developer.
- 2.5 × 4,840 = 12,100 gaj.
- Check in square feet: 12,100 × 9 = 108,900 square feet.
- Check back: 108,900 ÷ 43,560 = 2.5 acres. The numbers agree.
Acre multiples in gaj
| Acre | Gaj (square yard) | Square feet |
|---|---|---|
| 0.25 | 1,210 | 10,890 |
| 0.5 | 2,420 | 21,780 |
| 1 | 4,840 | 43,560 |
| 2 | 9,680 | 87,120 |
| 3 | 14,520 | 130,680 |
| 5 | 24,200 | 217,800 |
| 10 | 48,400 | 435,600 |
Gaj to acre
To go the other way, divide gaj by 4,840. One gaj is about 0.000207 acre, a very small number, so it is easier to work with larger figures:
- 500 gaj = 0.1033 acre
- 1,000 gaj = 0.2066 acre
- 2,420 gaj = 0.5 acre (half an acre)

How many plots fit in one acre
A common question from people buying in a new colony: if 1 acre is 4,840 gaj, how many 100 gaj plots can it hold? On paper, 4,840 ÷ 100 = 48.4 plots. In real layouts, roads, drains and open spaces take a share of the land, so the number of plots that can be sold is always lower. Ask for the approved layout plan to see the actual plot count.
The same gross figures for other sizes: 32.27 plots of 150 gaj, 24.2 plots of 200 gaj, and 19.36 plots of 250 gaj.
A quick mental check
If you do not have a calculator, remember that one acre is a little under 5,000 gaj. So 4 acres should be a little under 20,000 gaj (exact: 19,360). If your answer is far from this rough figure, a step has gone wrong, often a mix up between gaj and square feet. A square feet figure is always 9 times bigger than the gaj figure for the same land.
Tips
- Farm records in many states show hectares, not acres. Convert hectare to acre first, then acre to gaj.
- Always confirm the total area against the land record and the local revenue office before a sale or partition.
