Why there is no single answer
An acre means the same area everywhere in India. A bigha (बीघा) does not. It grew as a local unit, and each region kept its own size. So "1 ekad mein kitna bigha hota hai" has a different answer in Lucknow, Kolkata, Jaipur and Shimla. Before you convert, find out which bigha your village uses.

Some states have more than one bigha. In Uttar Pradesh, smaller kachha bighas of 10, 6.67 or 5 pucca biswa are also reported in some localities. In Madhya Pradesh, sources differ, with figures of 12,000, 17,424 and 27,000 sq ft all quoted. Gujarat's vigha is mostly 17,424 sq ft, but a larger vigha is reported in south Gujarat.
How to convert acre to bigha
Bigha = acres × 43,560 ÷ (square feet in your bigha)
Worked example for UP: 5 acre × 43,560 = 2,17,800 sq ft. Divide by 27,225: you get 8 bigha. The same 5 acre in West Bengal is 2,17,800 ÷ 14,400 = 15.125 bigha.
Writing it the local way
Village records and elders often say an area in bigha and its smaller units, not in decimals. A bigha splits into 20 biswa in UP, Rajasthan, Haryana and Himachal, and into 20 katha in Bihar and West Bengal.
- Pucca bigha: 1.6 bigha = 1 bigha 12 biswa.
- Delhi and Haryana old records: 4.8 bigha = 4 bigha 16 biswa. Haryana's settlement tables state the same: 4 bigha 16 biswa make an acre.
- West Bengal: 3.025 bigha = 3 bigha and half a katha.
- Himachal: exactly 5 bigha.

Tips before you trust a figure
- UP khatauni and Rajasthan jamabandi records now show area in hectares. Convert the hectare figure with hectare to bigha instead of relying on a spoken bigha count.
- In Bihar the bigha changes by district because the katha changes. Compare deeds in decimals, which are fixed.
- Ask the patwari, lekhpal or amin which bigha applies in your village before a sale or partition.
