1 bigha is not one fixed size. 1 bigha = 27,225 sq ft in Uttar Pradesh and central Bihar (the pucca bigha), 14,400 sq ft in West Bengal and Assam, and as small as 6,804 sq ft in Uttarakhand. Always check which bigha your land record or seller means.
What is a bigha?
Bigha (बीघा) is a traditional unit of farm land used across north and east India and in Gujarat, where it is called vigha. It grew out of local practice, so each region kept its own size. Government land records in many states now show area in hectares or acres, but people still buy, sell and divide land in bigha every day.
The pucca bigha of Uttar Pradesh and east Rajasthan is a square of 165 ft on each side, which gives 27,225 sq ft. The kachha bigha of west Rajasthan is a square of 132 ft, which gives 17,424 sq ft. That is why the same word can mean two very different areas even inside one state.

In Uttar Pradesh, smaller kachha bighas are also reported, such as a bigha of 10 biswa (13,612.5 sq ft) and one of 5 biswa (6,806.25 sq ft). Old records in Delhi and Haryana use a bigha of 9,075 sq ft, so 4.8 bigha make an acre there. Read the Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan guides for local detail.
1 acre mein kitna bigha?
Because the bigha changes, the answer changes too. 1 acre is 1.6 pucca bigha in Uttar Pradesh, 2.5 kachha bigha in west Rajasthan, 3.025 bigha in West Bengal, 5 bigha in Himachal Pradesh and 6.4021 bigha in Uttarakhand. Use the acre to bigha converter and pick your region.
The bigha chain: smaller and larger units
- Bigha and biswa (Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal, Uttarakhand): 1 bigha = 20 biswa, and 1 biswa = 20 biswansi. So 1 bigha = 400 biswansi. A pucca biswa is 1,361.25 sq ft.
- Bigha and katha (Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Ranchi): 1 bigha = 20 katha. In West Bengal 1 katha = 16 chatak, so 1 bigha = 320 chatak. In Bihar 1 katha = 20 dhur.
- Assam: 1 bigha = 5 katha = 100 lessa. The bigha is the same 14,400 sq ft as West Bengal, but each Assam katha is 2,880 sq ft.
Some quick figures for the pucca bigha: 1 bigha = 3,025 gaj (var), 2,529.29 sq m, 62.5 decimal and 100 standard marla. For the Delhi bigha, 1 bigha = 1,008.3333 gaj.
How to convert bigha
- Find the size of one bigha in your area in sq ft (see the table above).
- Multiply your bigha count by that size to get square feet.
- Divide the square feet by the size of the target unit. For acre, divide by 43,560.
Example: dedh bigha (1.5 bigha) in Uttar Pradesh is 1.5 x 27,225 = 40,837.5 sq ft. Divide by 43,560 and you get 0.9375 acre. The same 1.5 bigha in West Bengal is 21,600 sq ft, or 0.4959 acre. Do bigha (2 bigha) is 54,450 sq ft on the pucca measure.
For direct answers, use bigha to square feet, bigha to acre or bigha to gaj.
Practical tips
- Do not trust a bigha figure alone. Look for the hectare or acre figure on the khatauni, jamabandi or khatiyan and convert from that.
- When land crosses a district line, ask both sides which bigha they mean.
- For a sale, partition or court matter, confirm the local bigha with the tehsil, patwari, lekhpal or amin and check the land record.
