Common mistakes
- Treating are as acre. An are is just 100 square meters, about 1,076 sq ft. An acre is more than 40 times bigger.
- Using 2.5 for money matters. 2.5 is fine for a rough idea. On 10 hectare it overstates the area by 0.289 acre.
- Mixing dot styles. In a hectare record, 1.20 means 1.2 hectare. In a Telangana acre record, 1.20 usually means 1 acre 20 guntas. Read the column heading first.
Reading hectare figures on land records
Many states now print area in hectare and are. That is where most confusion starts.
- Maharashtra 7/12: modern extracts give area in hectare and are (H.R.). An entry of 1 hectare 20 are is 1.2 hectare, which is 2.9653 acre.
- Tamil Nadu Patta and Chitta: a figure like 0-02-50 means 0 hectare, 2 are and 50 square meters, which is 250 square meters. That is only 0.0618 acre, or 2,691 sq ft. It does not mean 2 acres.
- UP khatauni: area is shown in hectares, often to four decimals. 0.1260 hectare is 0.3114 acre.
- Kerala: land tax is worked out in ares. 1 are is 2.4711 cents.
