Small hectare figures on land records

Many people search for values like 0.0100 or 0.0160 hectare. These come from land records. UP Bhulekh khatauni entries, for example, show area in hectares, often with four decimal places. A small house plot or a family share then looks like a tiny number. Here is what those entries really mean:

Record showsSquare metersSquare feetGaj
0.0060 ha60 sq m645.83 sq ft71.76 gaj
0.0080 ha80 sq m861.11 sq ft95.68 gaj

0.1000 ha1,000 sq m10,763.91 sq ft1,195.99 gaj

A useful shortcut: 0.0100 hectare is exactly 1 are, which is 100 square meters or 1,076.39 square feet. So you can read the first four decimal places as ares and square meters. An entry of 0.0160 hectare is 1 are 60 square meters, which is 160 square meters.

Worked example

A khatauni share reads 0.0253 hectare.

  1. Square feet: 0.0253 × 1,07,639.1 = 2,723.27 sq ft.
  2. Gaj, if needed: 2,723.27 ÷ 9 = 302.59 gaj.
  3. Check: 0.0253 hectare is 253 square meters, and 253 × 10.7639 gives the same answer.

Going the other way, a 30 ft by 40 ft plot of 1,200 sq ft is 0.0111 hectare.

  • Count the zeros. 0.0160 and 0.160 differ by ten times. One is about 1,722 sq ft, the other about 17,222 sq ft.
  • Use the full factor. Rounding a hectare to 1,07,600 sq ft is fine for farms but loses about 39 sq ft per hectare.
  • Big land is easier in acres. 1 hectare is 2.4711 acre. See hectare to acre.
  • For a sale or partition, confirm the share with the tehsil or lekhpal and the land record itself.
