Hectare to square meter is the cleanest conversion in land measurement: 1 hectare = 10,000 square metres (sq m, वर्ग मीटर). Both are metric units, so there is no rounding, and the answer is the same in every state.

Picture a hectare

A hectare is a square 100 m long and 100 m wide. 100 × 100 = 10,000 sq m. If you walk along one side of a one hectare field in a square shape, you walk 100 m. A rectangle of 50 m by 200 m is also one hectare. So when someone asks "1 hectare mein kitne metre hote hain", the area answer is 10,000 square metres, and for a square field each side is 100 m.

The metric ladder

Indian records use three metric steps, each 100 times the one before:

  1. Square metre: the base unit, about 10.7639 sq ft.
  2. Are: 100 sq m. Records in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala and Tamil Nadu use it.
  3. Hectare: 100 are = 10,000 sq m.

One step further, a square kilometre is 100 hectares.

How to convert

square metres = hectares × 10,000

hectares = square metres ÷ 10,000

The quick way is to move the decimal point four places. Hectare to square metre: move it four places right. Square metre to hectare: move it four places left.

  • 0.25 hectare → 2,500 sq m
  • 0.0405 hectare → 405 sq m
  • 1,000 sq m → 0.1 hectare
  • 2,500 sq m → 0.25 hectare

Reading hectare, are and square metre in records

A Tamil Nadu patta may write an extent as "0-02-50". Read it as 0 hectare, 2 are and 50 sq m. Turn each part into square metres and add: 0 + 200 + 50 = 250 sq m. That is 0.025 hectare. It is a small house plot, not 2 acres or 2 hectares.

Worked example in the other direction: a 7/12 extract shows 1.2 hectares. Multiply by 10,000: 12,000 sq m. As hectare and are, that is 1 hectare 20 are.

How big is it in local units?

Once you have square metres, you can move to any unit. 1 hectare is about 2.4711 acres, about 247.1054 cents or decimals, and about 107,639.1 sq ft. For bigha, katha or biswa, the answer depends on your region; see hectare to bigha and hectare to biswa.

Tips

  • Square metres are not metres. A plot of 10,000 sq m does not have 10,000 m sides. It could be 100 m by 100 m.
  • Watch the dashes in records. In the hectare-are-sq m style, each part is separate. Do not read "0-02-50" as 2.50 hectares or 2.5 acres. It is only 0.025 hectare, which is 250 sq m.
  • Check with the office. If your figure does not match the deed, ask the taluk or tehsil office and compare with the land record before any sale.
