Gaj: 1 Gaj Kitna Hota Hai

1 gaj is 9 square feet. In Indian land deals, gaj means a square yard (वर्ग गज), a square that is 1 yard long on each side. One yard is 3 feet, so the area is 3 ft x 3 ft = 9 sq ft.

What is a gaj?

Gaj (गज) is an old Hindustani word for the yard. As a length, 1 gaj is 3 feet, which is 91.44 cm. When people buy a plot and say "100 gaj ka plot", they do not mean a length. They mean 100 square yards. That is why 1 gaj in land talk is 9 sq ft, not 3 feet.

The gaj is widely used for plots and property deals in Delhi and in towns across north India, including the plains of Uttarakhand. In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh the same square yard is called gajam, and house sites are sold in it. Gujarat and Karnataka also use the square yard for some urban plots.

As a length, 1 metre is 1.0936 gaj, and 1 gaj is 91.44 cm. Do not mix the length gaj with the area gaj when you read a deed.

How many gaj in a bigha?

This is a very common question, and the honest answer is that it depends on where the land is. The bigha changes from state to state, so the gaj count changes too. These are the commonly used values:

Common plot sizes in gaj

• 50 gaj = 450 sq ft, for example 15 ft by 30 ft
• 100 gaj = 900 sq ft, for example 30 ft by 30 ft
• 150 gaj = 1,350 sq ft, for example 30 ft by 45 ft
• 200 gaj = 1,800 sq ft, for example 30 ft by 60 ft
• 300 gaj = 2,700 sq ft, for example 45 ft by 60 ft

A plot does not need to be square. Multiply the length and width in feet, then divide by 9. A 25 ft by 50 ft plot is 1,250 sq ft, which is 138.8889 gaj.

How to convert gaj

• Gaj to square feet: multiply by 9. Example: 120 gaj x 9 = 1,080 sq ft.
• Square feet to gaj: divide by 9. Example: 1,200 sq ft / 9 = 133.3333 gaj.
• Gaj to square metre: multiply by 0.8361. Example: 100 gaj = 83.61 sq m.
• Feet and inches: change inches to feet first. 30 ft 6 in is 30.5 ft.

Tips before you buy a plot in gaj

• Ask for the length and width of each side, not only the gaj figure. Then work out the area yourself.
• Development authority papers often give area in square metres. Multiply square metres by 1.196 to get gaj.
• For a sale or registry, check the area in the land record and confirm it with the local tehsil or revenue office.
