See the bigha as a field
The easiest way to understand the different bighas is to picture them. Several of them are neat squares or rectangles. A pucca bigha is a square 165 feet on each side. The kachha bigha of west Rajasthan, the same size as the Gujarat vigha, is a square of 132 feet. The West Bengal bigha is a square of 120 feet.
| Region | Square feet | One exact shape |
|---|---|---|
| Pucca bigha: Uttar Pradesh, central Bihar (Patna, Arrah), east Rajasthan | 27,225 | 165 ft by 165 ft |
| Kachha bigha: west Rajasthan; also the Gujarat vigha | 17,424 | 132 ft by 132 ft |
| West Bengal, Assam, Jharkhand (Ranchi) | 14,400 | 120 ft by 120 ft |
| Madhya Pradesh (most quoted value) | 12,000 | 100 ft by 120 ft |
| Delhi, Haryana and Punjab (old bigha-biswa records) | 9,075 | 55 ft by 165 ft |
| Himachal Pradesh | 8,712 | 66 ft by 132 ft |

| Bihar: Bettiah (West Champaran) | 65,340 | 165 ft by 396 ft |
These shapes are for understanding only. Real fields are rarely perfect rectangles. The square feet values are the commonly used local figures, not government notifications, except where a state's own records define them.

How to convert bigha to square feet
Square feet = bigha × (square feet in your local bigha)
Worked example from Madhya Pradesh: 3 bigha × 12,000 = 36,000 sq ft. The same 3 bigha in a pucca bigha area is 81,675 sq ft, more than twice as much.
If the land is written with smaller units, convert them first. In West Bengal, 1 bigha is 20 katha of 720 sq ft each. So 2 bigha 5 katha is 2 × 14,400 + 5 × 720 = 32,400 sq ft. In Assam's Brahmaputra valley a bigha is 5 katha or 100 lessa, so 1 lessa is 144 sq ft.
Where sources differ
- Uttar Pradesh: besides the pucca bigha, smaller kachha bighas of about 13,612.5, 9,075 and 6,806.25 sq ft are reported in some localities.
- Madhya Pradesh: 12,000 sq ft is the most quoted, but 17,424 and 27,000 sq ft also appear.
- Haryana: the old record bigha is about 9,075 sq ft, while some property sites quote 27,225 sq ft.
- Gujarat: the vigha is mostly 17,424 sq ft, with a larger vigha reported in south Gujarat.

Practical tips
- Check the official record. UP khatauni shows hectares and Bihar records show acre and decimal; both are fixed units you can convert exactly.
- Do not take a figure from another state. A "1 bigha = 27,000 sq ft" line from a portal may not match your village.
- Ask the lekhpal, patwari, amin or circle office which bigha is used before you sign a sale or partition deed.
