For acre to hectare, use this: 1 acre = 0.404686 hectare. Going the other way, 1 hectare = 2.4711 acres. Both units are fixed, so these figures hold in every state.
Why this conversion matters in India
Farmers, buyers and families usually talk in acres (एकड़, ekad). Government land records in many states are written in hectares (हेक्टेयर). UP Bhulekh khataunis show area in hectares. So do the khasra and B-1 records of Madhya Pradesh, the current jamabandi in Rajasthan, and the 7/12 extract in Maharashtra and Gujarat. Patta and Chitta in Tamil Nadu use hectare, are and square metre. If you know your land in acres, you need this conversion to match it with the record.
How to convert acre to hectare
hectares = acres × 0.404686
acres = hectares × 2.4711
Worked example: a seller says the field is 7.5 acres. Multiply 7.5 by 0.404686. The answer is 3.035142, so the khatauni should show about 3.0351 hectares. If the record shows something far from this, ask why before you go further. A small gap can come from rounding, but a gap of a whole acre or more usually means a different survey number, a share that was split off, or a wrong figure.
Reverse example: a Maharashtra 7/12 shows 1.25 hectares. Multiply 1.25 by 2.4711 and you get about 3.0888 acres. That is a little over 3 acres.
Using are for small areas
Records often split a hectare into 100 are. One acre is about 40.4686 are. So a record that reads "0.81 hectare" is the same as 81 are, which is about 2.0016 acres, or just over 2 acres.
The "2.5 acres" shortcut and its error
Many people say a hectare is 2.5 acres. That is only a rough figure. The exact value is 2.4711. On a small plot the gap is tiny. On large holdings it adds up: 100 hectares is 247.1054 acres, not 250. The shortcut overstates the land by about 2.89 acres. Never use the shortcut in a sale deed, a partition or a loan paper.

Tips before you rely on a figure
- Look for the unit label. A record may write "1.2140". Check whether the column says hectare or acre. 1.2140 hectares is about 3 acres, while 1.2140 acres is less than half a hectare.
- Keep four decimals in hectares. Revenue records often go to four places. Rounding 0.404686 to 0.4 makes a 10 acre farm look like 4 hectares instead of about 4.0469.
- Use the record as the base. When the acre figure from the seller and the hectare figure in the record do not match, the record is the starting point. Ask the tehsil, patwari or lekhpal to explain the difference.
- For local units, convert the hectare figure next: see hectare to bigha or hectare to biswa, which change by region.
