Hectare to cent: 1 hectare = 247.1054 cents. So multiply the hectare figure by 247.1054 to get cents. Both units are fixed, so the answer is the same in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Why people need this conversion
In the south, land is bought and sold in cents (சென்ட், സെന്റ്). But official records have moved to metric units. Patta and Chitta in Tamil Nadu show extent in hectare, are and square metre. Kerala revenue records and land tax use ares and hectares. Newer resurvey records in Andhra Pradesh also use hectare, are and square metre. So the seller speaks in cents, and the paper speaks in hectares. This page joins the two.
How to convert hectare to cent
cents = hectares × 247.1054
hectares = cents × 0.004047 (or cents ÷ 247.1054)
The number comes from two steps. 1 hectare is 2.4711 acres, and every acre has 100 cents. Multiply them and you get about 247.1 cents.
Worked example: a small house plot
A record shows 0.0405 hectare. 0.0405 × 247.1054 = 10.0078. So the plot is about 10 cents, a common house plot size in Kerala.
Worked example: a farm plot
A record shows 0.12 hectare. 0.12 × 247.1054 = 29.6526, so the plot is about 29.65 cents, a little under 30 cents.
Worked example: going from cents to hectares
A seller offers 50 cents. Multiply 50 by 0.004047 and you get about 0.2023 hectare. In square metres that is about 2,023.43, so a patta for this land should read close to 0 hectare, 20 are and 23 sq m. If the record shows much less, ask why before you pay any advance.
Reading a Tamil Nadu patta in cents
A patta may write extent like "0-02-50". This is hectare, are and square metre, not acres. Follow these steps:
- Read the three parts: 0 hectare, 2 are, 50 sq m.
- Turn it all into square metres. 1 hectare = 10,000 sq m and 1 are = 100 sq m, so this is 200 + 50 = 250 sq m.
- Divide by about 40.4686 sq m, the size of one cent. 250 sq m is about 6.1776 cents.
So "0-02-50" is about 6.18 cents, not 2 acres. Reading it wrong is one of the costliest mistakes a buyer can make.

Tips
- Keep four decimals in hectares. One cent is only about 0.004047 hectare. Rounding a record to two decimals can hide a few cents.
- Grounds are different. In Chennai, 1 ground is 2,400 sq ft, about 5.5096 cents. Do not mix grounds and cents.
- Check with the office. For a sale or partition, compare your cent figure with the patta or Thandaper entry and confirm with the village or taluk office.
