To change sqft to acre, divide the square feet by 43,560, because 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft. One square foot on its own is a tiny part of an acre, only about 0.000023 acre, so this conversion is mostly used for large plots, farmhouses and project land.
How to convert square feet to acres
acres = square feet ÷ 43,560
Worked example: 1 lakh sq ft. 100,000 ÷ 43,560 = 2.2957 acres (rounded). To say it the way a village record would, take out the whole acres first. 2 acres is 87,120 sq ft. The rest is 100,000 minus 87,120 = 12,880 sq ft. Divide that by 435.6 (the size of a cent or decimal) and you get about 29.57. So 1 lakh sq ft is about 2 acres 29.57 cents.
Another example: 50,000 sq ft. 50,000 ÷ 43,560 = about 1.1478 acres.
A smaller plot: 20,000 sq ft. 20,000 ÷ 43,560 = about 0.4591 acre, so it is a bit under half an acre. Small answers like this are easier to read in a smaller unit. The same plot is about 45.91 cents, or about 18.37 guntha.
Where 43,560 comes from
The acre is fixed, and every common Indian unit that is a neat part of it gives the same total:
- 100 cents or decimals × 435.6 sq ft = 43,560 sq ft
- 40 guntha × 1,089 sq ft = 43,560 sq ft
- 8 kanal × 5,445 sq ft = 43,560 sq ft
- 4,840 sq yd (gaj) × 9 sq ft = 43,560 sq ft
This is handy for checking. If you split an area into guntha or kanal and the total does not reach 43,560 per acre, something has gone wrong.

Practical tips
- Know which area you have. For land, use the plot area. Do not use the built up or carpet area of a flat to work out acres.
- "sft" means square feet. Papers in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh often write sft. It is the same unit.
- Keep enough decimals. For small plots, give acres to at least four decimal places, or switch to cents, decimals or guntha, which are easier to read.
- Bigha is different. Do not divide by a fixed number for bigha. Its size changes by state; see acre to bigha.
- Verify. Before a sale or partition, match your figure with the area in the land record, and ask the local revenue office if it does not match.
