1 killa in acre is exactly 1 acre. Killa (किल्ला), also called ghumaon, is simply the Punjab and Haryana name for the acre of 43,560 sq ft. So 5 killa is 5 acre and 100 acre is 100 killa. No calculation is needed.

Why a killa equals an acre

Farm land in Punjab and Haryana was laid out in rectangles measured with a karam, a chain length of 5.5 ft. One killa is 36 karam by 40 karam:

  • 36 karam × 5.5 ft = 198 ft
  • 40 karam × 5.5 ft = 220 ft
  • 198 ft × 220 ft = 43,560 sq ft, which is exactly one acre

Haryana's revenue tables say "8 kanal = 1 acre (ghumaon)" and "1 acre = 36 karam × 40 karam". When you see killa numbers on a village map, each number marks one such acre-sized field.

The bigha rows are there because old records in parts of Haryana and Punjab still use bigha and biswa. The bigha is a regional unit, so see killa to bigha for all values.

From killa to murabba

Bigger holdings are counted in murabba (also called a square). One murabba is 25 killa, so it is 25 acre or 200 kanal. 100 acre is 4 murabba. When a farmer says "do murabba zameen", that is 50 killa, about 20.2343 hectare.

Parts of a killa

Land is often sold in pieces smaller than a full killa. Because a killa has 8 kanal, the usual pieces are easy to name:

  • Quarter killa = 2 kanal = 10,890 sq ft
  • Half killa = 4 kanal = 21,780 sq ft
  • 1 kanal = one eighth of a killa = 0.125 acre
  • 1 marla = 0.0063 killa

So an entry of 2 killa 6 kanal 10 marla is 2 + 6 ÷ 8 + 10 ÷ 160 = 2.8125 acre.

The one trap: the old "kila"

Sources differ on one point. Some old settlement tables in Haryana describe a "kila" of 4 bigha on the older, shorter karam. That works out to about 36,299 sq ft, smaller than an acre. In today's use, and in the kanal-marla records, killa means the full acre. If you are reading a very old record, check which system it follows before you assume 1 killa = 1 acre.

Tips

  • Web-HALRIS in Haryana and Jamabandi Punjab show area in kanal and marla. Divide total kanal by 8 to get killa.
  • A record like "3 killa 4 kanal" is 3.5 acre, because 4 kanal is half an acre.
  • For a sale, partition or court matter, confirm the area with the patwari or tehsil office.
