1 killa in bigha is 4.8 bigha on the old Haryana, Delhi and Punjab bigha of 9,075 sq ft. On the pucca bigha of Uttar Pradesh it is 1.6 bigha, and in Himachal Pradesh it is 5 bigha. The killa (किल्ला) itself does not change: it is one acre, 43,560 sq ft.

Start with the killa, then pick the bigha

In Haryana and Punjab, a killa (also called ghumaon) is the same as an acre. It is laid out as 36 karam × 40 karam. A karam is 5.5 ft, so that is 198 ft × 220 ft = 43,560 sq ft. One killa holds 8 kanal or 160 marla.

The bigha is the unit that moves. So the answer to "1 killa mein kitne bigha" depends on whose bigha you mean:

  • Pucca bigha: Uttar Pradesh, central Bihar (Patna, Arrah), east Rajasthan: 1 killa = 1.6 bigha
  • Kachha bigha: west Rajasthan; also the Gujarat vigha: 1 killa = 2.5 bigha
  • West Bengal, Assam, Jharkhand (Ranchi): 1 killa = 3.025 bigha
  • Madhya Pradesh (most quoted value): 1 killa = 3.63 bigha
  • Delhi, Haryana and Punjab (old bigha-biswa records): 1 killa = 4.8 bigha
  • Himachal Pradesh: 1 killa = 5 bigha
  • Uttarakhand: 1 killa = 6.4021 bigha

In Haryana the official old system is 4 bigha 16 biswa to one acre, which is the same as 4.8 bigha. That is the value to use when old jamabandi entries show bigha and biswa.

The Haryana confusion: 4.8 or 1.6?

Many property pages list a Haryana bigha of 27,225 sq ft, which would make 1 killa only 1.6 bigha. That figure is the pucca bigha of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Haryana revenue tables give the old settlement bigha of about 9,075 sq ft instead. Sources differ, so check what your village record uses. There is one more trap. In some old settlement tables, a "kila" means 4 bigha of the old measure, about 36,299 sq ft. In today's use, killa means the full acre.

How to convert killa to bigha

Bigha = killa × 43,560 ÷ local bigha size in sq ft

Example: a farmer in Haryana owns 5 killa. 5 × 4.8 = 24 bigha on the old Haryana bigha. The same 5 acres would be 8 pucca bigha in Uttar Pradesh or 25 bigha in Himachal.

For bigha to killa, divide by the same figure. 1 bigha is 0.2083 killa on the Haryana bigha and 0.625 killa on the pucca bigha.

Practical tips

  • A murabba is 25 killa. If a record shows 2 murabba, that is 50 killa or 240 old Haryana bigha.
  • Haryana land records on Web-HALRIS (Jamabandi Haryana) mostly use kanal and marla after settlement, so you may not need bigha at all: 1 killa = 8 kanal.
  • In Punjab, Jamabandi Punjab shows kanal, marla and sarsai. Old bigha entries appear mainly in older records.
  • Keep 4 decimal places while working and round only the final answer.
  • Before any sale or family partition, confirm the bigha size with the patwari or tehsil office.
