Acre to decimal is a fixed conversion: 1 acre = 100 decimal, and 1 decimal = 0.01 acre. Multiply acres by 100 to get decimals. The decimal is also called dismil, and in Bengali it is the satak.
One rule for every district
In Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal, land papers commonly give area in acre and decimal. Unlike the katha or bigha, the decimal is the same size everywhere: 435.6 square feet. That is why it is the safest unit for comparing deeds from different districts. If someone asks "1 acre in decimal in Bihar", the answer is the same 100 as in Odisha or Bengal.
How to convert
Decimal = acre × 100 and acre = decimal ÷ 100
Worked example from a record: the area column reads 2.37 acre.
- 2.37 × 100 = 237 decimal.
- In square feet: 237 × 435.6 = 103,237.2 square feet.
Many people say this area as "2 acre 37 decimal". That is the same thing: 2 acres are 200 decimal, plus 37, gives 237.
What a decimal looks like on the ground
A plot 20 ft by 21.78 ft is exactly one decimal, since 20 × 21.78 = 435.6. A common 5 decimal house plot is 2,178 square feet, for example 40 ft by 54.45 ft (2,178 sq ft).
Dismil to acre
For plots bought in dismil, divide by 100. A 5 dismil house plot is 0.05 acre. A 35 dismil field is 0.35 acre. 100 dismil is exactly 1 acre.

Decimal next to katha
Buyers in Bihar and Bengal often think in katha but read papers in decimal. Because the katha changes by region, the link between them changes too:
- West Bengal katha (720 sq ft): 1 acre = 60.5 katha, and 1 katha = 1.6529 decimal.
- Patna and Arrah katha (1,361.25 sq ft): 1 acre = 32 katha, and 1 katha = 3.125 decimal.
These katha values are commonly used figures, not government notified ones. See katha to decimal for all regions.
Mistakes to avoid
- Reading 1.5 acre as 1 acre 5 decimal. 1.5 acre is 150 decimal, not 105.
- Treating 0.06 acre as 60 decimal. It is only 6 decimal.
- Mixing hectare and acre. If the paper shows hectare, convert hectare to acre first. 1 hectare is 247.11 decimal.
- For a sale or partition, confirm the area with the circle office, tehsil or amin and check the khatiyan or record of rights.
