Why divide by 9
A yard is 3 feet. A square yard is a square 3 feet long and 3 feet wide. Count the one foot squares inside it: 3 rows of 3, which is 9. So every square yard holds 9 square feet, and dividing by 9 turns square feet into square yards.
This is where many people slip. A yard is 3 feet, but a square yard is 9 square feet, not 3.

A brochure lists a plot at 2,400 square feet. How many square yards?
- 2,400 ÷ 9 = 266.6667.
- Round to two decimals: 266.67 square yards.
- Check: 266.67 × 9 = 2,400.03. The tiny gap is only rounding.
If you only have the length and width
Searches like "feet to square yard" usually mean this. You have two sides in feet and want square yards. There are two ways, and both give the same answer.
- Multiply first: 30 ft × 40 ft = 1,200 sq ft. Then 1,200 ÷ 9 = 133.33 square yards.
- Change sides to yards first: 30 ft is 10 yd and 40 ft is 13.3333 yd. Then 10 × 13.3333 = 133.33 square yards.
For flooring or a concrete slab, this gives the area to cover. If you need the volume of concrete, you also need the thickness, which is a separate calculation.

Rounding without losing land
Square yard figures often end in long decimals, like 111.1111. For talk, two decimals are enough. For an agreement, keep the original square feet figure and write the square yard figure next to it, so nobody argues later over a rounded number. Rounding 1,000 sq ft down to 111 square yards loses 1 square feet on paper.

Multiply by 9. A 167 square yard plot is 1,503 square feet. A 200 square yard plot is 1,800 square feet.
