Converting 1 ground to square feet is simple: 1 ground is equal to 2,400 square feet. Ground (ग्राउंड) is the plot unit people use in Chennai and other towns of Tamil Nadu. Its size is commonly taken as 2,400 sq ft everywhere it is used, so the conversion is a simple multiplication.
Half ground, quarter ground and other common sizes
Most plot ads in Chennai do not say "1 ground". They say half ground, quarter ground or 2 grounds. Here are those sizes worked out in square feet, gaj (square yards) and cents.
| Size | Square feet | Gaj (sq yd) | Cent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quarter ground (1/4) | 600 | 66.6667 | 1.3774 |
| Half ground (1/2) | 1,200 | 133.3333 | 2.7548 |
| Three quarter ground (3/4) | 1,800 | 200 | 4.1322 |
| 1 ground | 2,400 | 266.6667 | 5.5096 |
| 1.5 ground | 3,600 | 400 | 8.2645 |
| 2 ground | 4,800 | 533.3333 | 11.0193 |
| 3 ground | 7,200 | 800 | 16.5289 |
So half ground is 1,200 sq ft and a quarter ground is 600 sq ft. These two numbers come up in almost every flat and house plot talk in the city.
How to convert ground to square feet
The rule has one step:
Square feet = ground × 2,400
Worked example: a seller offers 1.5 grounds. Multiply 1.5 by 2,400. You get 3,600 sq ft.
To go the other way, divide square feet by 2,400. A 3,000 sq ft plot is 3,000 ÷ 2,400 = 1.25 ground. One square foot is about 0.000417 ground.
What one ground looks like on the site
A ground is not a fixed shape. Any plot whose length times width gives 2,400 sq ft is one ground. Common layouts are:
- 40 ft × 60 ft = 2,400 sq ft (the most common one ground plot)
- 30 ft × 80 ft = 2,400 sq ft (a long, narrow plot)
- 48 ft × 50 ft = 2,400 sq ft (nearly square)
- 30 ft × 40 ft = 1,200 sq ft (half ground)
- 20 ft × 30 ft = 600 sq ft (quarter ground)
- 60 ft × 80 ft = 4,800 sq ft (2 grounds)
If the sides are not straight, use the land area calculator first and then convert the square feet.

Ground compared with cents, acres and Patta units
Outside the city, Tamil Nadu land is usually quoted in cents and acres. One ground is about 5.5096 cents, and about 18.15 grounds make one acre. In metric terms one ground is about 222.9673 square meters.
Patta and Chitta extracts show extent in hectare, are and square meter, not in grounds. One ground is about 2.2297 are. So if a Patta shows a small extent like 0 hectare 2 are 23 sq m, that is close to one ground, not "2 acres". Read the columns carefully.
Practical tips before you pay
- The 2,400 sq ft ground is commonly used local practice. It is not stated on a government notification that we could find, so confirm with the seller and the deed.
- Check the sale deed and the Patta through Tamil Nadu e-Services. The deed often gives the area in square feet as well; trust that figure over a spoken "ground".
- Round only at the end. 2.5 grounds is 6,000 sq ft exactly; do not round 2.5 to 2 or 3 in your head.
- For a sale, partition or court matter, confirm the measurement with the local village administrative officer or taluk office and match it with the FMB sketch.
