Bigha to hectare depends on which bigha you have. For the pucca bigha of Uttar Pradesh, central Bihar and east Rajasthan, 1 bigha = about 0.2529 hectare, so 1 hectare is about 3.9537 bigha. Bighas in other states are smaller or bigger, so the hectare figure changes with them.

Why you need this

Families in north and east India still talk in bigha (बीघा). But the records do not. UP Bhulekh khataunis show area in hectares. So do MP khasra and B-1 records, and current jamabandis in Rajasthan. When you read a record, you have hectares. When you talk to the family, you have bighas. This page connects them. Keep in mind that a hectare is a fixed metric unit of 10,000 square metres, about 2.4711 acres, so it is bigger than every bigha below, even the large Bettiah bigha of about 0.607 hectare.

How to convert bigha to hectare

hectares = bighas × (sq ft in your bigha) ÷ 107,639.1

Worked example, Rajasthan: a farmer in Bikaner has 4 kachha bigha. 4 × 17,424 = 69,696 sq ft. Divide by about 107,639.1 and you get about 0.6475 hectare.

Reading a UP khatauni back into bigha

Say the khatauni shows 0.7500 hectare. Multiply by 3.9537 (pucca bigha per hectare) to get about 2.9653 bigha. That is 2 full bigha, plus 0.9653 bigha. A bigha has 20 biswa, so 0.9653 × 20 = about 19.31 biswa. The family would call it "2 bigha 19 biswa", give or take.

Tips

  • The hectare is the anchor. The hectare in the record is a fixed size. If the bigha count you hear and the hectare in the record do not match, the bigha size is the likely cause.
  • Do not use one "national" bigha. 4 bigha is about 1.0117 hectares in UP but only about 0.2528 hectare in Uttarakhand.
  • Confirm the local bigha. For a sale, partition or court case, ask the lekhpal, patwari or tehsil which bigha applies, and check the khatauni on UP Bhulekh, MP Bhulekh or Apna Khata.
